Our Board MembersThe Emerald team is amongst the most experienced and respected in the country. Our senior executive and directors are industry leaders and specialists in the commodity industry. Our experience means our customers can be assured of receiving the best value, advice and insight available.
Alan is the founding Chairman of the Emerald Group and a major shareholder of the company. He is Chairman of the Emerald Remuneration & Nomination Committee and Deputy Chairman Emerald's Victorian joint venture, SQP Pty Ltd. Alan has had in excess of 30 years experience in the agribusiness sector in both executive and non-executive roles. In a 20-year executive career, Alan held CEO, senior management and trading roles with Elders IXL, French multi-national Louis Dreyfus Corporation, and the Al Ghurair Group, as well as six years as Head of Trading at the Australian Wheat Board. He has been an advisor and alliance partner on agribusiness issues with international accounting and advisory firm Arthur Andersen, and a guest lecturer in the Risk Management programs at Monash University. His non-executive roles have included Director of United Farmers Co-operative Company, where as Chairman of the Strategy & Planning Company he coordinated its merger in February 2008 with New Zealand co-operative Ravensdown. He was previously Deputy Chairman of Pulse Australia Ltd and a review group member appointed by the Government to undertake the NCP review of the NSW Grains Industry. He has served on the Council of the Agribusiness Association of Australia and New Zealand and as Vice President of the Australian Grain Exporters Association.
In 1997, Alan chose to pursue the development of his own business interests. In addition to his roles with Emerald, Alan is also currently Chairman and a major shareholder of Seashift Properties and the PIA Group. Alan founded risk and strategy group Kronos Corporate in 1997 before selling this business into Emerald in 2006. He founded and continues to own the Storage One self storage group. Alan is currently a Director of the Committee for Fraser Coast.
Mike is the Deputy Chairman of Emerald, appointed in 2007 following three years as a founding Executive Director. He is a major shareholder and Chairman of the Board’s Risk Management Committee. Mike is Chairman of Emerald’s South Australian joint venture E P Grain Pty Ltd. He is also a director of Southern Quality Produce Pty Ltd and Chairman of SQP’s Risk Committee, and is actively involved with the National Agricultural Commodities Marketing Association (NACMA), where he is a director representing mid-size companies (level b2), is Chairman of NACMA’s Corporate Governance Committee and is a registered trade arbitrator.
Mike has approximately 20 years experience in the Australian grains industry, and has previously held senior trading and management roles at a number of national and international corporations. At AWB Ltd (formally Australian Wheat Board), he was responsible for wheat trading within Australia and was trading manager for NSW. Mike then led the Australian trading operations of us food giant ConAgra Inc for five years, overseeing its expansion from a small base to in excess of one million tonnes annual throughput. Following his successful trading career Mike was appointed CEO of co-operative marketing group NETCO.
Pursuing his private interests Mike formed Ag Bureau, a private consulting group which specialised in commodity risk management. His clients included the Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE), where he performed a major critical review of the SFE’s agricultural commodities business.
Mike has held director and/or committee positions for a range of industry organisations including Rural Marketing and Supply Association (RMSA), Grain Legume Association of Australia (GLA), Australian Producers Cooperative, and the NSW Cooperatives Federation.
Peter is an experienced CEO and company director with global experience in a diverse range of industries including agriculture, media, chemical trading, manufacturing, logistics and banking. Peter is the Managing Director and owner of Cameron Media Sales, a diversified independent media representation company. He is also an Executive Director and part owner of Moama Grain Services. Previously, he was a director of a Telstra subsidiary and on the United Farmers Co-operative Limited Board prior to its merger with Ravensdown Fertilizer Cooperative Ltd of New Zealand.
Peter worked with the National Australia Bank as Group General Manager, Global Re-Engineering which delivered change projects in the banks’ Australian , New Zealand, UK and US operations. He was previously the Managing Director of the Australasian operations of a major Dutch trading group with operations in India, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand and, also, the Managing Director of Westgate Logistics, a significant Australian logistics company.
Peter also has extensive experience in asset management and divestment, has restructured private businesses and mentored management teams.
 Company Secretary and General Legal Counsel
Murray De Jong L.L.B., B.Com (Econ) Deakin Murray is the Company Secretary of Emerald as well as the General Legal Council for Emerald and its affiliated companies. He was the founding Company Secretary of Southern Quality Produce Pty Ltd and held this role until mid 2008.
Prior to joining the Group in early 2007, Murray was a solicitor at Hall & Wilcox lawyers, and prior to that at Anderson Rice lawyers. Murray’s area of expertise is in commercial and property law, and his experience includes an extended period in Europe working on secondment to APN Funds Management to assist in the development of its European Property Trusts. Murray is also currently the Commercial Manager of the PIA Group and is General Manager of Seashift Asset Management.
